The individuals selected for these positions will perform basic level technical research tasks in agronomy, horticulture, livestock care, and farm facility repair maintenance at the Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center (SMREC) located in Crossville, AL. The goal of SMREC research is to develop farm management practices that will help the region's livestock, poultry, row crop and commercial vegetable producers-particularly small-scale farmers-to operate more efficiently, sustainably and profitably. Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to the following: - Assists in soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, and harvesting crops used for research; operates and performs minor maintenance and repair on various research and farm equipment such as trucks, tractors, pickers, combines, lawn care equipment, and research equipment.
- Cares for animals which includes feeding, watering, administering medication, and transporting in compliance with regulations and research protocols and others defined criteria.
- Assists in collecting, recording and/or reporting various observations, measurements, or other information for research projects; and constructs, repairs, and maintains facilities which may include (but is not limited to) houses, barns, storage buildings, fences, corrals, and processing facilities.
