105 Heritage Wy, Juneau, AK 99801, USA Req #407 Job Summary The objective of the Thru the Cultural Lens: Deepening Connections Cultural Specialist is to provide direct cultural support for the Thru the Cultural Lens program at Sealaska Heritage Institute. Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workloads. This position will be responsible for scheduling with individual team members to provide project and program-level support for Indigenous knowledge content and collaboration with Elders and additional cultural specialists. Duties/Responsibilities - Oversee cultural components of Thru the Cultural Lens programs.
- Identify areas where cultural protocols and practices could be integrated into programming, curriculum, and activities.
- Collaborate on the integration of appropriate Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Indigenous Knowledge, customs, protocols, and values into SHI Thru the Cultural Lens Program activities, curriculum, pedagogy, grant proposals, presentations, and events.
- Facilitate community connections for Thru the Cultural Lens activities by Elders and additional cultural specialists ensuring appropriate introductions, invitations, and compensation.
- Support for planning and instruction for annual professional development.
- Provide feedback to evaluators and Leadership team about Thru the Cultural Lens activities. Required Skills
- Expertise in traditional ecological knowledge specific to Southeast Alaska Native culture and Southeast Alaska's communities\
- Experience working with others in a sharing/teaching capacity
- Experience in secondary education
- Demonstrated effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills Supervisory Responsibility This position will have no direct reports. This position's duties are performed at the Walter Soboleff Building. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. About this Role This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI's regular business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, employees may work up to or over 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration. Required Education and Experience
