You can help us solve the most urgent, important challenge facing the world today (and have fun doing it).Job Summary:As an R&D Engineer-I, you will play a pivotal role in designing and building complex mechanical systems both at the lab bench and pilot scale, working closely with scientists. This multifaceted role involves a range of skills, from building small custom equipment for our bench scale processes to supporting troubleshooting and customization of our world-class pilot facility. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of pilot operations and lab-scale equipment, making significant contributions to our innovative projects.Candidates will be based at our Home Office in Redwood City, with occasional responsibilities at our Pilot Plant, also located in Redwood City, CA.Essential Job Functions: - Troubleshoot mechanical equipment (lab, pilot and/or manufacturing scale) and control system failure with root cause analysis, followed by implementing engineering solutions.
- Communicate with manufacturers, machine shops, and vendors to purchase custom and off-the-shelf equipment.
- Perform basic machining and CNC in-house.
- Participate in experimental testing and trial runs using the equipment you designed.
- Seek out and implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce equipment downtime and promote organization.Basic Qualifications:
- B.S in engineering, including mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, electrical, chemical, or related fields with 1-3 years of work experience.
- Excellent CAD and modeling software skills such as Solidworks, CAD, CATIA or equivalent.
- Proven experience in designing, building and maintaining the lab, pilot and/or manufacturing scale machinery, equipment and their systems.
- Solid experience in setting up, calibrating, programming, operating and maintaining CNC machines and tools.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability and desire to work effectively in a team, collaborating effectively with fellow scientists and engineers, managing external partners, and setting an example of engineering and scientific excellence for the team.Preferred Qualifications:
