Bilingual Candidates may be eligible for a pay differential.STATUS: Full-Time/Non-Exempt/PermanentGENERAL SUMMARY: We're seeking a creative storyteller, strategic thinker, and skilled communicator to lead the charge in amplifying the Center's voice and impact. The Communications Manager will bring expertise in writing, public relations, media engagement, and project management to craft compelling narratives that resonate with our community and expand our reach.Reporting to the Director of Development and Communications, this pivotal role will focus on public relations, media relations, executive thought leadership, fundraising-related communications, and co-leading programming storytelling. The Communications Manager will collaborate across teams to create strategic content, manage multimedia projects, and develop campaigns that showcase the Center's deep impact. Additionally, the Communications Manager will oversee the communications budget, implement the email communications strategy, supervise the Communications Associate, and execute impactful initiatives that elevate the Center's visibility and strengthen its connection to the community. From shaping long-term strategies to crafting daily content, this role drives both the strategic vision and day-to-day communications efforts.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSKey Responsibilities:

  • Department Supervision: Supervise and mentor the Communications Associate within the department.
  • Strategic Planning & Brand Management: In partnership with the Director of Development and Communications, develop, maintain, and assess the Center's external communications plan, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. Oversee brand identity, voice, and positioning, and define key messaging strategies to enhance visibility and advance the Center's mission.
  • Content Leadership: Serve as project manager, chief editor, and content developer for major communications channels, including email campaigns, social media, annual impact reports, brochures, videos, blogs, and more. Manage the website, including overseeing content development, overseeing aesthetic quality, and assessing user experience.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Partner with teams across the organization to create messaging around relevant LGBTQ+ issues, programmatic initiatives, and strategic goals. Ensure brand consistency across all marketing materials, set communications goals, and track and report on progress as relevant.
  • Media Relations & Outreach: Lead and expand the Center's proactive media strategy. Handle rapid response to breaking news, monitor media coverage, and manage media relations-writing press advisories and releases, fielding inquiries, and managing press conferences. Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media contacts.
  • Fundraising Communications: Collaborate with the Director of Development and the Individual Giving Manager to craft compelling fundraising messages and generate communications that support contributed income growth (excluding grant writing). Co-lead communications strategy for the annual Soiree fundraising gala.
  • Vendor & Volunteer Management: Oversee relationships with marketing-related contractors (graphic designers, printers, freelancers) and supervise volunteers to support communications efforts.
  • Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks as needed to support the Center's mission and communications goals.QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Strong commitment to the SF LGBT Center's mission and values, with a dedication to racial, social, and economic justice. Understanding of the needs of vulnerable LGBTQ+ communities and the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders within the LGBTQ+ and allied communities.
  • Minimum of three years' experience managing communications and PR functions, with LGBTQ+ communications experience preferred. Management of junior staff is highly desired.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, along with strong presentation and analytical abilities.
  • Extensive experience in media relations, including relationship-building, narrative development, and crafting thought leadership messaging. Crisis communications experience is strongly desired.
  • Experience in fundraising communications, including developing fundraising campaigns and aligning them with broader organizational storytelling.
  • Proficiency in Pardot or other email marketing platforms; experience managing websites and visual brand strategy.
  • Experience with budgeting and managing relationships with consultants or contractors.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proven track record of making sound judgment calls in prioritizing communications tasks and managing resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse, fast-paced environment.IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), with the ability to assess and adapt to rapidly evolving communications technologies.
  • Insight into analytics software (e.g., Sprout, Meta dashboard), and communications databases (e.g., Salesforce via Pardot), with the ability to use data and research to craft compelling narratives.
  • Proficiency in Canva for social media content creation and quick-turn graphic design is highly preferred.WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This position is primarily office based at the Center's 1800 Market Street location with an ability to negotiate a schedule of remote work up to a maximum of 40% time.
  • Essential physical requirements:
  • Must be able to operate a computer and other common office machinery such as a copier/fax/printer up to eight hours/day daily.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for periods of several hours daily.
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to work in a shared office space with 3 or more employees in the same office with moderate levels of noise.
  • Employees in this position must be able to perform these essential functions satisfactorily, and, if requested, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of their job.
  • Hours are primarily Monday - Friday with occasional need for evening or weekend work. Work schedules are negotiable within a standard 9:00 am - 7:00 pm window.
  • Local travel may be required for meetings or offsite events. Out of town travel is infrequent and negotiable.
