Fire Marshall Job Description City of Yazoo City DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief, incumbent directs the overall activities of the enforcement of State laws, Municipal laws in the field of fire prevention, fire investigation and fire inspection. SUPERVISON RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: - Directly reports to the Assistant Fire Chief
- Receives general supervision and administrative direction from the Fire Chief EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:
- Preservation of life, safety and property conservation of the citizens and surrounding areas
- Plans schedules of inspections of structural buildings, based on code enforcement rules and regulations
- May inspect facilities for code violations and submit code of compliance
- Manages and recommends implementing goals, objectives and practices for providing effective and efficient fire and life safety services
- Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with community and business owners
- Performs constructive feedback to improve fire prevention standards
- Explains technical information in a way that is understood by those who need to know
- Writes descriptive reports that describe in concise and objective terms what was observed
- Writes reports that presents data in a logical and clear manner, and the reasons for recommendations
- Inspect fire scenes after fire extinguished to determine probable cause of fire and observe any indication of possible arson
- Interview owners, employees or other to determine facts surrounding fire
- Prepare reports on suspicious fires for further study
- Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE:
- Pertinent federal, State and City of Yazoo Ordinances, rules and regulations
- Completion of Mississippi State Fire Academy
- State Certification in Fire Inspection
- Firefighting and rescue operations in the removal of endangered occupants andtreatment of injured
- Practice and procedures for fire suppression, inspections, pre-emergency planning, hydrant testing and maintenance
- Public safety education, fire origins and determinations
- Pertinent laws and codes governing fire suppression regulations
- Current fire apparatus capabilities and the resolution of problems associated with the malfunction or lack of function for fire suppression
- Department policies and procedures regarding work performance and standards
- Technical and administrative aspects of fire prevention and emergency services
- Interpretation and analysis of fire scene cause and effect
- Department policies and procedures regarding work performance and standards SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to make reports and keep records
- Competence in computer applications
- Extensive knowledge of the overall operations of the City of Yazoo including policies, procedures, and ordinances
- Ability to remain calm and to follow up when under pressure and or in anemergency
- Ability to control personal feelings and to demonstrate 'respect to others involvedin fire inspections or investigations
- Ability to stay calm in stressful and emergency situationsAbility to explain reasons for action so that all will cooperate
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working and business relationshipswith community and department
- Ability to speak clearly at all times, but particularly when under pressure
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during work
- Ability to understand verbal communications from others
- Ability to interpret written messages and/or dispatches
- Ability to read maps to locate addresses, citizens
