Job Description

Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of Director of Nursing Quality and Performance Improvement or designee, the Assistant Director of Nursing Quality serves an integral part of the nursing leadership team who ensures that standards of nursing practice are in alignment with the organizational, regulatory, and nationally recognized professional standards, and evidence-based practice. The Assistant Director of Nursing Quality is instrumental in implementing and evaluating Nursing Quality and Performance Improvement (PI) activities and unit-specific PI projects.

Nursing Quality and Performance Improvement and all clinical divisions under Nursing Dept.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors nurse-sensitive/quality indicators and projects for Nursing Department
  • Assists and evaluates nursing performance improvement activities and unit-specific PI projects to ensure quality and appropriateness of care, patient safety, and compliance with regulatory standards
  • Develops and maintains nursing quality indicator databases
  • Coordinates the collection of data with unit ADNs or designee; Aggregates, analyzes, and extrapolates quality indicators data and transforms them into actionable information; Assists the units in the implementation of corrective actions and in evaluating results/outcomes
  • Prepares monthly/quarterly nursing quality indicator reports for every unit, displaying performance in forms of graphs, scorecards, or story boards.
  • Disseminates and interprets in-house nursing quality indicators and National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) reports to respective unit leadership, and works closely with unit ADNs and staff to guide them in the identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement initiatives
  • Assists Director of Nursing for Quality with monthly, quarterly and annual quality/performance/improvement reports to present at various committees
  • Provides Nursing Quality/PI orientation to newly hired nursing staff
  • Coordinates and manages NYC H+H/Kings County's National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI)
  • Ensures accurate data collection and submission of selected monitored indicators
  • Adheres to RN survey data collection protocol
  • Assists in readiness of announced and unannounced regulatory agency visits and participates in various regulatory agency surveys
  • Coordinates nursing quality council meetings, grand rounds and nursing peer reviews
  • Participates in nursing policies, procedures, and standards revision
  • Liaises with Risk Management Department on nursing quality risk reduction monitoring and reporting; Assists in investigating patient safety concerns and incidents to include debriefings and assists in the implementation of corrective action plans
  • Interfaces with Quality Management Department on nursing quality improvement concerns and participates in hospital-wide quality improvement teams
  • Participates in departmental and hospital-wide committee meetings
  • Enforces with staff I-CARE (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence) values/principles in providing patient care
  • Promotes a culture of engagement where staff thrive and contributes to positive patient/family experience
  • Maintains familiarity and remains up-to-date with regulatory agency standards
  • Continuously strives to increase core knowledge and role competency through leadership development activities
  • Performs other related duties, as directed Pathway to Excellence
    • Plays a significant role in planning, scheduling, organizing, implementing, and operationalizing Pathway to Excellence Program
    • Knowledgeable with the six (6) Pathway to Excellence standards and the different elements of performance
    • Engages staff in practicing the standards of Pathway to Excellence program
    • Fosters the foundation of collaboration among staff and supports a shared-governance environment
    • Encourages participation of staff in shared governance committees
    • Actively engages staff for discussion and inputs on resource allocation and cost management
    • Supports staff during times of organizational change or change in leadership
    • Promotes a culture of day-to-day recognition
    • Participates in peer-to-peer performance feedback/review and uses these feedback as opportunities for improvement Shared Governance
      • Assists DON for Nursing Quality in organizing and guiding different shared governance councils Minimum Qualifications
        1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
        2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
        3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

        Knowledge and skills:

        Leadership, management, communication, coaching, counseling, problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution.

        Computer Programs/Software Knowledge

        Competency in MS Office Suites (Word, Excel, Access, and MS Project)

        Years of Experience:

        Minimum of two to three years clinical nursing experience; and

        Minimum of two to three years Nursing Quality experience
