Job Description If you're looking for a career in environmental health, join the Army National Guard as a Preventive Medicine Specialist. Your primary responsibility will be to inspect and recommend proper corrective action on environmental and sanitation conditions to keep military personnel safe and healthy. Preventive Medicine Specialists study and prevent the spread of disease. You will conduct or assist with inspections, surveys, and laboratory procedures. You may also supervise facilities or serve on preventive medicine staffs, as well as develop community health education programs. Some of the Skills You'll Learn --- Sanitation inspection procedures --- Understanding of parasites and diseases affecting humans --- Bacteriological analysis of potable water Helpful Skills --- Interest in biology, chemistry, and algebra --- Ability to follow detailed procedures precisely --- Interest in scientific and technical work Through your training, you will develop the skills and experience to enjoy a civilian career with privately owned research institutions, public health departments, and environmental sciences professions. With additional study, you may be able to qualify for certification as a registered environmental health specialist/registered sanitarian and certified radiation protection technologist. In the Army National Guard, you will learn these valuable job skills while earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance. Job training for Preventive Medicine Specialists consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 15 weeks of Advanced Individual Training.
