SUMMARY: A Diesel Technician Level 2 is a mid-level position responsible for performing complex maintenance and repair tasks on diesel engines, vehicles, trailers, and refrigeration units. Building upon foundational skills, the Level 2 Technician handles a broader range of diagnostic and repair duties with minimal supervision. This role involves troubleshooting and repairing engine components, electrical systems, fuel systems, and drivetrain issues, as well as performing structural repairs on trailers and applying paint finishes. The Level 2 Technician is expected to work efficiently, ensuring all repairs meet safety and regulatory standards while maintaining a high level of quality. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Independently diagnose and repair engine components, fuel systems, electrical systems, and drivetrain issues on diesel vehicles and trailers.
- Perform thorough inspections of trailers, identifying and repairing mechanical, structural, and electrical issues, including braking systems and suspension components.
- Repair or replace defective parts, such as axles, bearings, hubs, and lighting systems on trailers.
- Install, repair, and replace aftermarket parts, such as liftgates, ramps, reefer units.
- Conduct routine maintenance tasks, including brake adjustments, tire replacements, lubrication, and servicing of air brake systems.
- Can apply primers, basecoats, and clear coats using spray guns in a controlled paint booth environment is preferred, but not required.
- Perform preventative maintenance on refrigeration units and HVAC systems used in refrigerated trucks and trailers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues on vehicles and trailers, ensuring proper functionality of all systems.
- Conduct tests to ensure the quality of repairs performed.
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and parts used, and provide reports on the condition of vehicles and trailers.
- Ensure compliance with DOT and other safety regulations during inspections and repairs.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are properly maintained and calibrated, contributing to a safe and organized work environment. -
SKILLS REQUIRED: - Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, trailers, and related systems, including mechanical, electrical, and structural components.
- Solid understanding of paint application techniques or experience working in a paint booth environment preferred, but not required.
- Ability to work independently on complex repair tasks with minimal supervision, demonstrating problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with diagnostic tools and equipment used in diesel and trailer repairs.
- Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and provide accurate reports on repairs.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and tools in the automotive and diesel industry.
- Relevant certifications, such as EPA Section 608 for refrigerant handling, are preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: - High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of a technical program or vocational school training in diesel mechanics or the equivalent of 2-5 years of experience in diesel mechanics, with proven proficiency in handling more complex repairs and diagnostics is required.
- Continued education or certification in specialized areas, such as electrical systems or HVAC, is highly recommended.
