Job Summary

The Shift Lead is a working position that oversees the operations, activities and personnel of an assigned shift to ensure compliance of established guidelines, procedures, and policies. The Shift Lead ensures appropriate staffing levels are maintained and coordinates radio assignments. An ideal candidate for the Dispatch Shift Lead position should be able to demonstrate an understanding and experience in the following: training and development, engagement in quality improvement initiatives, conflict resolution, community engagement, critical incident management, professional development and others.

The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University's Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions: University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO.

Communication: Communicates respectfully with the campus community, peers, supervisors, subordinates, and other agencies in order to resolve citizen complaints and maintain good working relationships.

Conflict Resolution: Addresses interpersonal conflicts between team members; effectively maintains communication between police, campus security, and hospital security personnel; works with supervisors of these bureaus to resolve minor conflicts.

Training and Coaching: Ensures team members receive regular training to stay up-to-date on new procedures, technologies, and best practices in emergency response; ensures team members are compliant with Utah POST training mandates; assists and coaches team members with difficult and/or complex calls.

Professional Development: Engages in their own professional development while assisting team members in their own professional growth; seeks training opportunities; stays informed of best practices; attends industry conferences; participates in pre-employment interviews.

Quality Improvement Initiatives: Participates in quality improvement efforts with the Dispatch Manager and other Lead Dispatchers; performs and analyzes call and radio reviews to help identify areas for improvement; implements changes to enhance overall performance; participates in policy, procedures and training material creation and updates.

Community Engagement: Participates in campus events; educates the campus community about emergency procedures; fosters positive relationships with the campus community.

Critical Incident Management: Maintains proficient skills as a working dispatcher; works with other leaders within DPS to manage critical incidents that exceed the scope of routine operations; activates specialized response procedures and/or coordinates with external agencies as needed; exercises good judgement in coordinating and acting upon emergency requests; debriefs/counsels team members after stressful situations and critical incidents.

Equipment Operation and Troubleshooting: Ensures operational readiness of equipment related to the 9-1-1 emergency phone system, radio systems, monitoring systems, and computer aided dispatching (CAD) equipment which includes troubleshooting deficiencies.

Recordkeeping: Ensures minimum staffing requirements are met; reviews and approves time cards and approves time off requests; maintains clear and accurate documentation of coaching conversations and trainings.



Minimum Qualifications
18 years old.
High School diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Type 40 WPM.
Legal to work in the United States.
No disqualifying criminal history.
"Train the Trainer" certified to train new employees.
Must be current on all EMD, CPR, BCI, POST Certifications, ICS 100, 200, 700, 800.
Must have worked as a 911 Dispatcher or a Dispatcher I for at least 5 professional years.
Must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of Police, Medical and Security duties and performed other duties as assigned (i.e. Dispatch Schedules, maintaining schedules in outlook, etc.).

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants who are able to provide or demonstrate:

- Prior Supervisor Experience.

-NENA 911 Center Supervisor Certification.

- Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working and professional relationships.

- Exhibit effective interpersonal communication skills.

- Ability to maintain calm and professional in stressful and emergent situations.

Work Schedule Summary: 12 hour shifts required from either 0600-1800 or 1800-0600. Assigned shift will depend on departmental needs. Ability to work weekends, some holidays and special events.
