Job Description



Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.


Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.

Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a nine-month, Mathematics faculty position in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) beginning the Spring 2025 semester (i.e., January 2025).

Responsibilities include teaching college level courses in Mathematics. Faculty members teach approximately 15 credits per semester for a total of approximately 30 credits per academic year. This workload may include face-to-face and hybrid/distance learning courses during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends. In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, departmental meetings and curriculum planning, programmatic assessment, course and program evaluation, community service, club sponsorship, student recruitment and retention activities, and mentoring new and part-time faculty.

Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 15-minute teaching session on a pre-selected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled.




Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.




KSA's/Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Mathematics or a master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Mathematics. Credentials and ability to teach a wide variety of mathematics courses offered at the Community College level, including Applied, Basic and Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics and Statistics. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Understanding of the community college mission and commitment to encouraging and fostering student success. Passion for teaching mathematics and a commitment to continuous improvement. Ability to teach in an engaging and effective way that promotes conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and real-world applications.




Additional Considerations
Experience teaching college-level Mathematics, preferably in a community college setting. Experience teaching Applied, Basic, and Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics and Statistics. Experience using technology in the classroom. Experience designing and delivering online content, and experience with curriculum development.
