REQUEST FOR BIDS Highland County, Virginia Part-Time County Attorney Position Available January 2025 Located in Monterey, Virginia Reports to the Highland County Board of Supervisors Minimum Requirements Current Virginia Bar license. Five (5) or more years of experience in local government law. Strong writing and demonstrated ability to write in plain and simple English. Prior experience in zoning matters is a plus. Ability to understand complex legal issues and write memoranda explaining those issues to non-attorneys. The impact of errors is extremely serious and affects the entire organization and the general public. The successful candidate, if an individual, must pass pre-employment criminal and credit background checks. Location Highland County, known as Virginia's Switzerland, is in the Allegheny Mountains, on the western border between Virginia and West Virginia, and is remote, rural and mountainous. Highland is bordered on the south by Bath County, on the north by Rockingham County, and Augusta County on the east. Highland's population is approximately 2,300 people, spread over 460 square miles of mountains and valleys. The Town of Monterey is the only incorporated town in the County. There are no cities. The County is known for its Maple Festival held the second and third weekends in March each year to celebrate the production of a large quantity of maple syrup in the County. The primary employer is the Highland County School System. Farms producing sheep and cattle and supporting the poultry industry are prevalent.
