The Center for Education and Career Opportunities (CECO) program offers individuals aged 16 - 21 years old without a high school diploma the chance to return to school to continue their education. This program is run in coordination with King County and its Open Doors high school partner.

Under direct supervision, an Office Assistant 1 learns and performs a variety of routine office support functions including copying materials, filing documents, posting records, and other office tasks that serve the CECO program.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Greet students, prospective students, staff, community members and all individuals entering the office.
  • Stacks, stamps, opens, codes, sorts, files or alphabetizes correspondence, records, or materials according to established procedures and predetermined categories; maintains files and records.
  • Assist with spreadsheet maintenance and data entry using Excel.
  • Send reminder/follow-up emails to information session participants.
  • Open and date-stamp incoming mail; learns to sort and route mail; picks up and prepares outgoing mail; learns tomaintain logs, lists, rosters, directories, and other records.
  • Assist prospective students in completing CECO program specific paperwork.
  • Answers incoming calls through Microsoft Teams/VOIP system; following clearly established guidelines, answers routine questions; receives and refers visitors.
  • Functions as a receptionist.
  • Keyboards/types office forms, envelopes, labels, and index tabs.
  • Proofreads material and identifies areas needing corrections.
  • Photocopies and collates material.
  • Performs basic arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Enters and retrieves data from electronic data processing systems; establishes and updates information generates documents and correspondence; communicates with others via electronic means; updates computer system files.

    Required Education & Experience
    • High school graduation or GED (General Educational Development) equivalent OR
    • Six months of clerical work experience OR equivalent education/experience Skill In/Knowledge Of:
      • Working knowledge of MS Office applications, especially Excel, Outlook, and Word.
      • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness.
      • Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities.
      • Entering and/or retrieving data accurately in computerized record keeping systems.
      • Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels.
      • Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner. Conditions of Employment

        Physical Work Environment:
        • Ability to meet the physical demands of sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk/computer workstation, using repetitive arm, hand and finger movements.
        • Ability to work in an open office setting with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions, work under pressure, and handle multiple tasks/prioritize competing demands.
        • Ability to read printed materials and a computer screen. Terms Of Employment/Salary:
          These positions may work full or part-time on an on-call basis, for periods of one (1) week to six (6) months to fill in for permanent staff absences. As an hourly on-call position, there is no predictability or guarantee of the number of hours/days that may be scheduled. Hourly employees maintain an at-will employment relationship meaning that either you or the College may terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.

          If your hours total more than 350 in any 12-month period, your position will be represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees Union.

          Position is limited to 1 year or 1,050 hours, whichever comes first. Per State of Washington rules, you may reach these limits only once at Shoreline CC. If you have held another part-time hourly position at Shoreline Community College since July 1, 2022, additional time and hours limits will apply, so you may not be eligible for hire in this position.
